Violent Career Criminal Stabs Police Dog During SWAT Standoff

On September 1, 2022, at about 9:30 pm, deputies were dispatched to 1737 Potomac Rd. SW, where a female had barricaded herself inside a residence. The female, identified as 40-year-old, Jebrene Garcia arrived at the home belonging to her sister's ex-boyfriend and forcibly made entry by removing an air conditioning unit from a front window. Once inside, she armed herself with a large kitchen knife and hid.

Jebrene was in a physical altercation with the home's occupants before they could escape. Jebrene remained agitated and noncompliant with efforts to take her into custody. BCSO SWAT and the Crisis Negotiation Team were activated. (story continues below)

"Nordy entered the home and a few minutes later, the dog retreated from the home with a knife protruding from his back," said Bernalillo County Sheriff Manuel Gonzales III at a press conference.
K9 Nordy was transported to a local veterinarian hospital and is in stable condition. Jebrene finally surrendered after hours of negotiation attempts and she was taken into custody this morning just after 8 am. (story continues below)

Jabrene Garcia will be booked into MDC on the following charges:
• Aggravated Residential Burglary • Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon • Battery • Resisting • Evading or Obstructing an Officer • Injury to a Police Dog • Aggravated Assault on a Peace Officer
Garcia has a violent criminal record ranging from child abuse, aggravated battery, and assault on police officers dating back to 2003. She either has pled her cases, they were dismissed, or are awaiting trial.
K9 Nordy will have a few weeks off and is expected to return to duty.
