Albuquerque, NM – On October 25, 2021, at approximately 6:26 pm, Bernalillo County Sheriff's Office Homicide and Violent Crimes Detectives were called to the Metropolitan Detention Center in reference to a deceased inmate. MDC employees informed investigators that a physical fight between cellmates Leon Casiquito and Telea Lui had occurred before MDC staff could intervene. Medical intervention was immediately provided to inmate Casiquito, who was not breathing and had severe trauma to his head. Life-saving measures were unsuccessful, and Casiquito was declared deceased by medical personnel.
According to the Bernalillo County Sheriff's Office ,41-year-old Leon Casiquito and 25-year-old Telea Lui were the only occupants inside their cell during the fight, and all other inmates were in their cells due to a lockdown. Detectives interviewed inmate Lui, and he admitted that he initially punched Casiquito and then went into a rage. Lui continued to violently batter his cellmate until MDC staff removed him and intervened. At the time of the incident, Lui was in custody for aggravated battery on a household member with a deadly weapon and false imprisonment. Telea Lui has since been rebooked on an open count of murder for killing Leon Casiquito.
