Mom Charged in Neglect and Death of Baby with Meth in System

APD’s Crimes Against Children Unit has now charged Christina Bennett, 31, with child abuse resulting in death following an investigation into allegations that she abused her infant prior to her death. The 4-month-old child was found dead at a residence in early 2023.

Officers responded on April 21, 2023, to a report of an unresponsive child at a home near the 10000 block of Ralph Street NE. Bennett had taken the deceased infant to the infant’s grandparents’ home after reportedly using illegal drugs through the night.

According to a criminal complaint, an autopsy did NOT determine the cause and manner of death, but "meth" was detected in the baby’s blood and it was unclear if it was due to breastfeeding, accidental ingestion or if Bennett gave the baby the drug.

The complaint goes on to say there was a second child who was taken out of custody of Bennett's care. Police were able to get a safe-house interview where the surviving child revealed Bennett would call her "slut" and "whore" and accused her of sleeping with older men. The second child ran to the Ralph Street NE house and told the grandparents the baby was dead.
