A tense domestic dispute took a troubling turn on the evening of February 4, 2024, as a police officer, identified as Isaiah Ortiz y Pino, now faces charges of battery against his girlfriend, whose name has been omitted for privacy reasons. The incident unfolded near the block 500 Archibeque Ave SE, in Rio Rancho, NM.
According to a criminal complaint, at around 8:28 PM, Rio Rancho Police received a distress call from the mother of the victim, who had been in contact with her daughter. She informed her mother that she and her boyfriend, Ortiz y Pino, were embroiled in a heated argument that had turned physical.
As the officers arrived at the scene, they found the victim visibly distressed, along with her 11-year-old daughter, who had witnessed the altercation. The victim recounted the events that led to the dispute, which had occurred in the presence of both children.
The argument began in the kitchen and escalated when Ortiz y Pino became upset, throwing beer foam against the kitchen wall. When the girlfriend voiced her disapproval of Ortiz y Pino's actions, tensions escalated further. He requested that the girlfriend go into the bedroom to discuss matters, but the dispute continued to escalate.
According to the criminal complaint, the girlfriend stated that Ortiz y Pino threw her onto the bed multiple times, causing her glasses to fly off her head. She reported that he used physical force, grabbing her sweatshirt, as well as the back of her neck and hair.
After the altercation, Ortiz y Pino left the residence with his daughter, leaving her (the victim) in distress. She immediately contacted her mother to inform her of the disturbing events.
Rio Rancho Police officers observed evidence of the physical altercation, including a red mark on the victim's neck, redness on her chest area consistent with being pushed, and disheveled hair where Ortiz y Pino had allegedly pulled it. The victims eyeglasses were found at the foot of the bed, corroborating her account of what happened.

Authorities petitioned for and obtained an emergency order of protection on behalf of the victim. He had an arrest warrant issued, which was served at the Metropolitan Detention Center. He is charged with battery against a household member. Ortiz y Pino has been with APD for less than 1 year and is under probationary employment. This means he can be fired for any misconduct.
